Kyra in Korea!
This past summer, I had the privilege to represent USC in Seoul, South Korea through the USC Global Fellows Internship Program!
I’ve always wanted to immerse myself in an international experience during college, but due to financial constraints and scheduling issues, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to partake in study abroad during my time in undergrad. What makes Global Fellows unique is that you have the opportunity to experience what it’s like to work full time in Seoul, Osaka, or Tokyo in a field that interests you. You get to specify what you want, and the on the ground team in your host country will try to match you with an internship that best serves your career goals— and it’s all funded by USC!
As an Occupational Therapy major, I was initially daunted when I was matched with a Marketing startup, DIOKOS and its subsidiary, KoreaAgain. My fellow intern and Trojan from USC was a Biomedical Engineering Major, and the both of us were new to the field and weren’t quite sure what to expect. My placement was not directly related to the healthcare field, but I had identified shared values about why I chose Occupational Therapy and my company’s goals. I chose OT in order to support individuals on their journeys to lead lives meaningful to them and I resonated with our company’s vision to support and guide foreigners as they navigated working and living abroad in Seoul. As an intern, I had the unique chance to provide my personal insights and perspectives as someone experiencing exactly that.
Working for an intimate startup, my coworker and I were able to form close relationships with our boss and the CEO of our company, Danny Han. Later on, my coworker and I even got to be part of the onboarding and selection process for additional interns for our class and expanded our team to members from University of Oregon and Curtin University in Australia!
It was during my time in the office and daily lunches together with Danny where my peers and I had conversations about what we wanted to get out of our time in Seoul, and also about our lives, goals, and aspirations. My boss even let me miss work one day to visit an Occupational Therapy practice started by a Korean USC Alum! From him, I got to learn more about South Korean culture, business etiquette, and practices, and got to share my own experiences as a Filipina American student at USC! Soon, I realized I had gained not only a mentor, but a lifelong
friend.
Because this program is funded, (you don’t pay for housing or airfare AND get a stipend for your meals), it gives you the chance to immerse yourself in the working culture of a different country while giving you the opportunity to explore and learn about the country and culture that you’re in!! After work or on the weekends, it was always exciting to think about what new dinner spot my friends and I would try, where we’d want to go shopping, or the next tourist attraction to visit on our bucket list! By the end of my two months in Seoul, I didn’t realize how independent I had become. For example, I was able to navigate the city with public transit all by myself, even though I couldn’t read Korean! I could order the foods that I loved, and properly express my gratitude and respect to the locals who showed me kindness.
Without a doubt, I can say that being part of this program was truly one of the best experiences of my life, and one of the best decisions I made here at USC.
If you’re at all interested, I highly recommend checking out information sessions for the program below! There is one in-person this Tuesday!
And of course, if you guys have any questions about my experience with the program, please do not hesitate to reach out to me! Fellow TP member Sam Tang was also abroad in Seoul working as a Marketing Intern for F45 Korea! The both of us absolutely loved our time in Seoul and we would be down to chat with anyone who’s interested in hearing more!
