Self-Care Column: Exploring this Upcoming Valentine’s Day

Good day, Troy Philippines! This is Jake, one of your friendly neighborhood Spring 2025 development interns, helping out for this week’s Dev Corner! I hope these last few weeks have treated you well and that school has started on a positive note. I’d also like to thank any of our new members who attended our first General Meeting this last Thursday. It was very nice getting to see some new and familiar faces, after so long, and it was really fun seeing you all socialize and participate in all the games we played. For our new members, we hope to see you again soon and continue to make new friends here in TroyPhi!

Speaking of good relations, February marks that time of the year where “love is in the air!” Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying that Valentine’s Day has a significant influence on our social structure. From heart-shaped chocolate boxes to flower bouquets, there are numerous ways in which you can impress that special someone or convey how much you care about those you secretly admire! Although, sometimes you might feel as though you want to treat yourself to some of those sweets and while it is nice to treat yourself every once in a while, try thinking about what this time is centered around. For instance, there was one time where I went to this Valentine’s Day event where I just wanted to get some chocolate and have it all for myself. However, I started to feel a bit selfish about the whole idea and instead of keeping the chocolate, I ended up giving it to one of my classmates that I was partnered with for a group project, just as a way to say “thanks.” It’s not just about those you love or those you wish to be closer towards. It’s also about showing how much you care and being grateful for those around you!

“Oh but Jake,” you might be wondering, “I want to do something really nice for someone I adore for Valentine’s Day! Do you know anything I could do?” I’m glad you asked, even if you didn’t, and there’s one thing you can do that is sure to capture your Valentine’s heart. Within Filipino traditions, there’s something known as “harana,” in which a man, usually accompanied by his friends, will gather outside of a lady’s window in the middle of the night and perform a special serenade to convey his love for her. Now doesn’t that sound romantic? If your fair lady, or handsome man, doesn’t have a window where they can look outside, perhaps you can serenade right outside their door. It might be a bit more confrontational, but it definitely helps bring your hearts closer! Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have a good rest of the week!

-Jake
