For those of you who picked up or were picked up, I’m glad that you met your perfect matches! I know I did! :,)

Self-Care Column
Can y’all believe we’re already on Week 7 of school?! Sending you all the strength to get through midterm szn and honestly.. Just life in general! If you haven’t done so already, be sure to give yourself a pat on the back! You should all feel so proud of yourselves!
I’m not sure if some of you can relate, but when life gets busy, I find that my self care tasks are often what is put to the side, or sacrificed first. My personal favorite self care tasks include going to the gym, meditating, or journaling! But sometimes, I feel guilty for “indulging” in these tasks when I could be doing other things like prepping for a class, or studying for my next assignment.
In my OT101: Caring for Your Self class, my professor Dr. Ashley Uyeshiro told us that oftentimes, people only do the things that are good for them if they can find the time for it. I myself am guilty of this! But when we treat self care as something that is just as essential as getting in that assignment or checking off the next thing on our To-Do Lists, it can make a world of difference for us. I’ve found that when I do decide to go to the gym instead of that one hour of extra studying, the endorphins and satisfaction that came from exercising improved my mood and fueled me to get things done afterwards. After all, how can we accomplish what we want to do if we can’t show compassion and take care of ourselves first?
You might be thinking.. Kyra, I want to start making self care a priority but I just really don’t have the time for it. Honestly, I’m navigating this right alongside you all. It starts with the small things and the acknowledgement that you want this to be a priority in your life. Below, I’ve compiled some easy strategies that I’ve personally used to implement self care as I’m going about my day!
Make Things Accessible For Yourself
For the gym in particular, half the struggle I have is just getting there in the first place. A strategy Dr. Uyeshiro mentioned in our class that to combat this is just by wearing your workout clothes/shoes to school. You don’t necessarily have to go to the gym, but you’re ready for it in the case that you may want to. The decision is yours. I’ve been implementing this the past few weeks and it’s worked like a charm! What ends up happening is that since I’m already dressed, I tell myself that I might as well go for a bit while I have time.
Practice Affirmations Throughout Your Day
Self-affirming myself has become such an essential part of the way I practice self care. The way we speak about ourselves is incredibly important, and studies have shown that positive self talk reduces our stress and strengthens our resilience!
This week, a friend recommended an app called “I am - Daily Affirmations.” I love it, because you can adjust the settings so that it delivers you up to 10 affirmation notifications throughout your day. You can also add them as a widget on your Lock Screen so you’re affirmed as soon as you open your phone! It’s nice to receive these little reminders and have a chance to show yourself some love in the midst of your day.
Here is one I received this past weekend. Feel free to use it to affirm yourself!
Take Breaks!!!
We’re not meant to be working all the time! Our brain isn’t meant for constant overload. Listen to your body and know when you need to take a step back. When you take your breaks, make sure they’re real breaks! Do things during this time period that are actually fulfilling to you– whether it’s having a snack, scrolling on TikTok, taking a walk around the room (or library lol). What’s restorative to us looks different, so find out what works for you!
Remember That You’re Enough!
At USC especially, it’s easy to get caught up in self comparison and the pressure that if you’re not working towards the next thing, you're falling behind. One of our previous Directors of Development, Amanda, told me in the past that we often forget that being a student at this university is no easy task, and that this in itself is enough. You are so valuable and are worth more than your accomplishments!
I hope this segment was helpful for you all! Feel free to reach out if you wanna chat more about this. I’m here! <3
Lissa’s Recipe Suggestions:
Hey everyone! This upcoming weekend is a special one because it’ll be Family Weekend here at USC! I’m super excited to show my family around campus, and if your family is coming as well, I hope you have a blast with them especially during the tailgate! However, I know that a lot of people’s families are unable to attend. If this is the case, I’d love to offer you a little slice of home by pitching in some links to classic Filipino recipes! All of these recipes are written by Filipino creators, but keep in mind that there are also many different cooking methods for these recipes. Anyways, feel free to make these recipes anytime you desire, and I hope they add a little bit of joy and nostalgia to your day if you use them! 😋
Sinigang: a warm, comforting, and hearty sour soup that’s a classic in Filipino cuisine
