WASSUP TROYPHIIIII! I hope you’re all doing well and taking care of yourselves as we enter one of the most hectic times of the semester. With midterms being in full force, some recovering from Friendship Games, and Pilipinx American Culture Festival (PACF) and Halloweekend being underway, it is easy to lose track of time and overlook what we already have. Being in the thick of it all means recentering yourself can be a bit more challenging—when you can, I urge you all to re-evaluate your priorities, and know that it is okay to prioritize your own wellbeing at the expense of others’ expectations.
Our Internal Vice President Cai and I will be hosting our THIRD Joilibee (a combined name of Josh and Cailin) Office Hours, THIS WEDNESDAY from 7 - 9 PM AT WPH B30. To get in the spooky mood, we plan on recounting a few superstitious Filipino supernatural stories, as well as watching a horror movie from TFC’s “Maalala Mo Kaya.” There will be free halloween candy and other snacks, so make sure to join us! As a reminder, the theme of this year for Troy Philippines is “roots” — to understand just how deep our individual roots are, we hold a roundtable discussion in the beginning of every Office Hours to reflect on our own Filipino identity and attachment to our culture.
As a reminder, here are some resources and links that you should be aware of; they are for you to take advantage of!
Connect with us on our LinkedIn! Reap the benefits of being in the network with many successful Troy Philippines alumni by networking through our platform. If you have any opportunities you would like us to push on our LinkedIn page, please fill out this form, and we’ll be sure to give you the space you deserve.
Look at our Discord server in the #resources channel for resources or opportunities that can get you to where you want to be next!
As Pilipinx American History Month (PAHM) comes to a close, I hope our programming has taught you a little bit more about our culture, and that you are more confident in expressing it. When reflecting, also consider: how do you express your Filipino culture? What parts are you especially proud of, and how do they define you as a person? Lead with these newfound values and ideals, and I’m sure you’ll grow in fondness of your own identity.
I am so proud of you all and how far we’ve made it into the semester already. Continue to lead with love and a stronger sense of self-identity, and make sure to take care of yourself when you can. As always, please feel free to reach out to me at jplacido@usc.edu or if you see me around at TP events – see you at Joilibee Office Hours and PACF!
Stay lit,
Josh Placido
Heyyy Troyphiii!! It's Cherise, one of your development interns! I'm currently a sophomore majoring in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention on the pre-med track! With midterms starting to come to an end (or at least I think they are), I'm hoping all of you were able to have a restful and fun weekend.
It's important to get lots of rest especially after a busy week and being able to find a good balance where you can make time for yourself is important! I personally do this by giving myself time to have a mini spa day at home and even if I am extremely busy, I will put a face mask on while I'm studying! I encourage all of you to think about these few questions to practice mindfulness: How can I incorporate events outside of academics without compromising my own responsibilities? How can I keep this goal realistic? What can I control in the present? Knowing the answer to these questions can help all of us be less stressed in the long term!
As you all know, despite it being a busy time academically, Halloween is coming up in about 4 days! Whether you like to go out for Halloweekend or stay in and watch scary movies there are many ways to celebrate while also still making time to take care of yourself!
A few ways you can celebrate (and hopefully destress) are:
Making halloween cookies with friends (I personally love this one because I am planning to do this with my friends)
Paint or carve pumpkins
Watching halloween movies
Spending time (and or going out) with friends!!!
If you so happen to be the type of person to go out for Halloweekend, make sure to come to Troyphi’s Monster Mash II at 9pm on 10/31 (yes on halloween night)! It's a costume party so make sure to come all dressed up!
Hope to see you all at monster mash!
Cherise Ilagan :)
