Self-Care Corner

Every Sunday morning, I wake up with an underlying feeling of tension and anxiety in my chest. The day has barely begun, but I’m already thinking about how I’m dreading Monday and I don’t want the weekend to end!

While this feeling comes up every week, it felt really magnified this past weekend during Fall Break! I had an amazing time with my family and I just didn’t want it to be over. No matter how hard I tried to make my days last longer, it just felt like time was moving faster.

Coincidentally during Fall Break, I also learned about “openhanded living.” It’s the idea that when we live our lives with an open hand, we’re not trying to hold on to what we have or push anything away, but instead we openly accept what comes to us.

It comes with recognizing everything our lives will pass– not only the bad things that we wish could be over, but also the things that we wish could last forever. Knowing this is comforting because when we turn the fear of losing what we have and let go of feeling that there isn’t enough of something, we can turn this into gratitude for what we do have and choose our peace.

The book I learned “openhandedness” from mentioned this: “If we grip an experience too tightly, it’s already lost.” I realized that maybe this is why I feel like my weekends or happy experiences are over before they even begin.

I know these things are always easier said than done, but hopefully, with conscientiousness, you can try to implement this into your life too.

*** All information about “openhandedness” came from the PHED119: Introduction to Mindfulness course and book Mindfulness for Young Adults: Tools to Thrive in School and Life! I will stay plugging this course because it has been such a helpful tool for me this semester when it comes to coping with stress and anxiety. If you have 2 units in your schedule next sem, I highly recommend it!!

Before I plug you additional resources below, I’ll leave you with one affirmation from the “I Am” app that you can practice right now!

Say it with me or write it down: I am in charge of how I feel, and today, I choose happiness.

Love you all & here for you always,

Internships

The SIPA (Search to Involve Pilipino Americans) and non-profit in Historic Filipinotown Stop The Hate Youth Leaders Internship application closes this Friday, October 20th. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Pilipino identity and work closely with a local HiFi organization!

Learn more about SIPA and the intersection between Pilipinx identity and art at our second PAHM GM this week! Kevin and Bea, representatives of SIPA will be hosting a workshop for this GM, and you’re more than welcome to ask them any questions then!

Read the following for more details.

“We are recruiting for our Stop the Hate Youth Leaders Internship that will provide education, awareness, and leadership skills to youth ages 16 – 22. This 6-month internship, starting in December 2023, focuses on gaining the skills and knowledge to prevent anti-Asian American hate and violence. Throughout the internship, youth will attend trainings to learn how to talk about racism with their peers, prevent it through education and workshops, and stopping it through de-escalation techniques. Additionally, they’ll be learning how to use arts and culture as a method to heal and take care of ourselves. The internship will culminate with a youth-led conference to kick off APAHM.”
