Recognizing Gratitude and Opportunity

Writer's picture: USC Troy PhiUSC Troy Phi

What’s good TP??! It’s so crazy to believe that it’s already November. In nearly four weeks we’ll be wrapping up this semester, and while it can be easy to look forward to the year ending, I think it’s arguably more important to recognize what has happened.

With a lot of crazy emotions and experiences in the air, it can be very helpful in your own personal journeys of self-growth to reflect and remember what has led you to this moment – what parts of this semester have helped you grow? Who in your life guides you to becoming a version of yourself you are proud to be? What hobbies or interests lead your personal journey of fulfillment? How have you worked towards your dreams? And if you don’t know what those dreams are yet, how are you finding it?

Let these open-ended questions give space towards even more questions to where you are able to finally answer: what are you grateful for? With all of these things you’ve listed to answer the above questions, these are just the beginnings of what you can be grateful for. So much has led up to you being able to study at USC, be a part of Troy Philippines, and live in such a diverse community like Los Angeles. Recognizing that will make your endeavors and future happenings be even more fulfilling.

With gratitude opens the gates of opportunity: understanding how meaningful each chance you get is allows you to be more receptive to whatever opportunity is presented to you (e.g., making new friends, or connecting with different companies in your target industry) and amplifying the benefits that come with it.

As Thanksgiving comes, let’s finish off the school year with the guiding principles of gratitude and opportunity. Speaking of opportunities:

  • If you know anyone who is a TP alumni, tell them to follow our new alumni Instagram @troyphialumni! We have some exciting events for them that are coming up, such as:

  • Under “The Corner” on our website, click our new Notion page at “Opportunities & Resources” to see a constantly updating page of any professional/personal opportunities and resources for you!

    • Have any in mind you think would benefit TP? You can directly add them too!

  • Our next Joili-Bee Office Hours is this Wednesday, November 13 at WPH B30 from 7 - 9 PM with Internal VP Cailin Reyes. This one’s theme is: “Your Network is Your Net Worth” so bring your resumes, cover letters and LinkedIn pages – I will be giving a presentation about how to improve all of these and more!

I hope you all continue the semester with an openness to opportunity through gratitude, and take advantage of what is already established for you. I can’t wait to see you all succeed, and please reach out to me if there is any resource or guidance I can provide myself.

Forever sigma,

Josh Placido

What’s up Troyphii!! its Cherise, one of your fall 2024 dev interns! I hope you all are doing well and that you are able to get some rest during this part of the semester. Hopefully this long weekend was able to give you all some time to reset for the rest of the week! Personally, it has been extremely busy especially with classes but as Thanksgiving is coming up, I think it’s important to be mindful of the positive aspects in our lives!

As we approach thanksgiving, I encourage all of you to take a few minutes to think about some things you are thankful for and to think about a few people you are thankful for. For me, I am thankful for my parents! I am thankful for them because they are always my number one supporters in everything I do and I am extremely lucky to have them in my life. I am also thankful for all of my friends and other family members! Even if you aren’t the type of person to tell someone you are thankful for them, I encourage you to remind them during this time. There are many ways to do this other than directly saying thank you, you could write it in a letter, help them out a little extra, or even give them a small gift!

A few other things I am thankful for is access to education and time to be with my friends and family! Oh also on a more casual note, I am thankful for getting all the classes I wanted today when I registered for next semester! Anyways, I encourage you all to let the people you are thankful for know and to make sure to recognize smaller things in your life that you can be thankful for!

See you next dev corner!
